**Given:**

Distance = 96 km

Downstream time = 12 hours

**Formula Used:**

Speed = Distance / Time

Downstream speed = Speed of the boat in still water + Speed of the stream

Upstream speed = Speed of the boat in still water - Speed of the stream

**Calculations:**

Let the speed of the boat in still water be c and that of the stream be v.

In downstream,

⇒ the total speed = 96/12 = 8 kmph

⇒ c + v = 8 kmph

In upstream, we have

⇒ Total time taken = 12 + 12 = 24 h

⇒ Upstream speed = 96/24 = 4 kmph

⇒ c - v = 4 kmph

Solving these two equations by adding them, we have

2c = 12

⇒ c = 6 kmph

Speed of the boat in still water = 6 kmph

And hence, v = 2 kmph

Speed of the stream = 2 kmph
